Exploring Colonial Antigua ποΈ
ποΈ About Antigua Guatemala
Founded: 1527 as "Santiago de Guatemala"
Former Capital: Served as Guatemala's capital for over 200 years
The Name: After the devastating 1773 Santa Marta earthquakes, the capital moved to Guatemala City, and this became "La Antigua Guatemala" (The Old Guatemala)
UNESCO Status: World Heritage Site
Architecture: Stunning Spanish colonial buildings with colorful facades and earthquake ruins
π Parque Central (Central Park)
The Heart of Antigua
Buzzing, lively green square flanked by colonial-style colonnades and historic buildings. Perfect for people-watching!
Surrounding buildings:
- Cathedral de Santiago
- Palace of the City Council (El Palacio del Ayuntamiento, built 1743)
- Portal of Commerce
- Portal de la Sexta
π Cathedral de Santiago (Ruined Cathedral)
Built: 1545 | Destroyed: 1773 earthquake
An eerie and atmospheric place with towering columns and wide archways leading to open sky. The collapsed roof is now piles of rubble, with pigeons roosting in cracks and weeds sprouting between stones.
Entry fee: Small fee to wander inside - well worth it!
Next door: Replacement cathedral with colorful gilded Biblical figures including fabulous Virgin Mary in velvet robes and golden crown
π Santa Catalina Arch (Arco de Santa Catalina)
Built: 1694
THE most photographed monument in all of Guatemala!
The iconic buttercup-yellow archway with perfect views of Agua volcano cone through the arch. Street lined with colorful painted single-story houses.
History: Built to connect Santa Catalina Convent to a school across the street. The convent was a closed order - nuns couldn't be seen in public, so a secret passageway inside the arch allowed them to cross without going outside!
Location: Just two blocks north of Central Park
π Iglesia CatΓ³lica San Francisco el Grande
Imposing church still very much in use (may have active services). Magnificent exterior with earthquake-flattened monastery ruins next door featuring colorful frescoes and shady courtyards.
Special significance: Final resting place of Brother Pedro de San JosΓ© de Bethancourt, a Franciscan monk who dedicated his life to helping Antigua's poor. His tomb is in a separate building - visitors come to pray for miracles. Wall of thank-you notes from those who believe prayers were granted!
π Convent of Las Capuchinas
18th-century convent housing strict order of nuns from poor families (no admission fee required unlike other orders)
Badly damaged in 1773 earthquake and abandoned. Today: photogenic warren of rooms, chapel, gardens, cloisters and courtyards. Visit the cells where nuns lived!
